Mathematics, Mathematicians, and Mathematics Education

چکیده
I am one of a growing number of research mathematicians who are substantially engaged with school mathematics education. Such outreach has a long and honorable tradition. In this lecture, I illustrate some of the ways that I think this can be helpful, and even essential. Upon his retirement in 1990 as president of the ICMI, Jean Pierre Kahane spoke perceptively of the intimate connection between mathematics and mathematics education in the following terms:

S ince at least the publication of A Nation at Risk [2] in 1983, there has been ferment about precollege mathematics education in the U.S. Since then, but particularly since 1993, research mathematicians have been more active on the precollege mathematics scene than at any time since the days of the New Math in the 1960s. Indeed, the pages of the Notices have regularly had articles, opinion pie...
متن کاملAfterword to Engaging Young Children in Mathematics
I was initially apprehensive about the invitation to speak at the Conference on Early Childhood Mathematics because I had very little experience working with young children on mathematics. I was invited to the conference as one of the mathematicians, and the other mathematicians expressed similar concerns. Nonetheless, the early childhood teachers, representatives from state education departmen...

In specialized topics of aesthetics, structure and function, the buildings of Islamic architecture in Iran during certain periods, show the strong presence of intellectual sciences such as mathematics. The use of geometry as a part of the science of numerical mathematics, which in its intellectual position has complex calculations, indicates the connection of Islamic architects with the mathema...

Most mathematicians consider themselves, at least to some degree, to be both educators and researchers. Yet few embrace or even respect the subject at the intersection of these fields: research in mathematics education. Mathematicians rarely apply their own logical acumen to assessment of teaching and learning, nor do they often read the vast and growing literature in educational research. They...
متن کاملRethinking of the Mathematical and Architectural Relation from the Perspective of the Algorithm
So far, many scholars have spoken of mathematical and architectural mergers. Different perspectives in this regard suggest that there are two general approaches paraphrastic and historians in most of these studies. But what has not been said about this aspect is common mental practices in mathematical science and architecture knowledge that affects the work of mathematicians and past architects...
